I have fond memories of summers at camp Mowglis in the early 80’s, and I sincerely believe the Mowglis “School of the Open” experience helped to shape the man I have become. It seems to me that while in the midst of just being a kid, this growth and maturity is difficult to see as you are simply having a great time and do not realize the life skills you are learning. However, looking back as an adult I cannot fail to notice the skills, behaviors, values and “can-do” attitude I can attribute directly to that formative experience. This last year my 12-year-old son attended Mowglis for the first time, and my wife and I were pleasantly surprised by the newly found growth and maturity he displayed after only a few short weeks. As one minor example, we were walking through the Boston airport after picking him up from camp and he was rather loaded with his camp gear. I picked up one of his bags offering to help and he said to me, “No Dad, I got it. They are (referring to the bags) my responsibility.” My wife and I just looked at each other surprised and rather proud of the changes we were already seeing in him as he heaved all his bags onto his back and headed to our gate.

I can't imagine what life would be like without my mowglis experience. I spent seven wonderful summers there as a camper. The friends, adventures, crew, mountain climbing through the White Mountains, and of course we swam in the greatest lake ever. Wish I was there right now!

I spent 9 consecutive summers at Camp Mowglis, and rate the experience as one of the foundations for my growth as a person. I not only had a series of amazing summers, but I was taught important life skills that I could not, and did not receive anywhere else in my life. I have seen immense change and growth in the young boys and men who choose to take that terrifying 7 week leap, so much so that I can't wait until I am lucky enough to send my son. If Mowglis is even a remote consideration for your family, I urge you to take that leap and see for yourself the impact of this place.

Our family was introduced to Mowglis in 2002. Our oldest son had spent 3 weeks the previous summer at a large boys camp on Lake Champlain. While this was/is a wonderful camp, with a long and storied history, we found it was just too big for our son. However, being believers in the camp experience we investigated several other traditional boys camps in Maine before deciding on Mowglis. What appealed to us about Mowglis was the small and nurturing environment, the emphasis on traditional camp activities, the crew program and the seven week length of stay. We also appreciated that the boys and staff came from all over the country and the community included international boys (as opposed to drawing a lot of boys from the same town). My husband and his brothers had all attended an 8 week camp, and he felt strongly this was an important part of the personal growth that happens over the course of several summers. We are now the parents of 3 Mowglis graduates and all our boys have also been on the staff. I know they had opportunities that would not have been available to them at a larger camp; but, more importantly, I know they learned lessons about values and character that will last a lifetime.

Little did I realize on my first day of Mowglis back in 1967, that all these years later, the Camp would still be such an important part of my life. To this day several of the guys I met there remain some of my closest friends. Any camper who enjoys the experience of Mowglis will remember it for a life time. I always have appreciated how Mowglis doesn't just point a boy towards an activity and tells him "go have fun" but, teaches him to become proficient and how to best enjoy it. So many of the activities I take part in today - the hiking, the kayaking, all the time spent outdoors- were learned at Mowglis. Enough for the nostalgia....., It's a fun, fun place to spend a summer. Steve Minich Camp Graduate 1971
